A redesigned tip, not a copied one
Vic Firth created barrel-tip versions of its two most popular models, the 5A and the 5B. According to Neil Larrivee, who heads education and product development at Vic Firth, each tip was worked out on its own by reshaping the original teardrop, rather than bolting one shape onto both sticks. The result is a well-balanced stick with a clear voice.

- Same length, same diameter, same taper. Only the tip changes: barrel instead of teardrop, for a bit more volume and bite, according to Vic Firth.
- Barrel tip vs acorn tip: what is the difference?
- A barrel tip has a broader, even contact area, so the attack sounds fuller. Acorn and teardrop tips narrow more toward the end and vary the sound more with the playing angle.
- Is this the same as the 5AB?
- No. The 5ABRL is the barrel-tip 5A ("BRL" for barrel); the 5AB is the 5A with a black finish.
