Zildjian A Mastersound 14" Hi-Hat Top Cymbal
The A Mastersound 14" top is the upper cymbal of a Mastersound hi-hat, sold on its own. It is for completing a pair, replacing a cracked top or changing the character of a hi-hat without buying both cymbals again.
What sets it apart
- Top cymbal only, medium weight
- More presence and bite on 2 and 4
- High definition, rated 8 out of 10 by Zildjian
- 14" diameter, the original Mastersound size
Half a pair: what to know before buying
The fast, clean "chick" that made the Mastersound's reputation comes from the bottom cymbal: its hammered edge vents the air trapped between the two cymbals. This reference is the top only. For the full sound, pair it with the Mastersound bottom, sold separately by Zildjian. On another bottom, it keeps its attack, but the chick will depend on the lower cymbal.

Frequently asked questions
- Which hi-hat cymbal goes on top?
- The lighter one. This is precisely the top cymbal, medium weight, which mounts on the clutch of the hi-hat stand rod.
- Why does the heavier cymbal go on the bottom?
- Zildjian explains it: a slightly heavier bottom firmly supports the top and balances the foot chick against the open hi-hat wash.
- What is the difference between a hi-hat top and bottom?
- The top mostly carries the stick sound; the bottom shapes the foot chick. On the Mastersound, it is the bottom's hammered edge that vents the air and makes the chick so clean.
