Zildjian A New Beat 14" Hi-Hat Cymbal Pair
The A New Beat 14" is an all-purpose pair of hi-hat cymbals: a medium top over a heavy bottom, for solid stick sound and a firm foot chick. It is the hi-hat Zildjian considers the most versatile it makes, the one you set up when you do not know yet what style you will play tomorrow.
What sets it apart
- Complete pair: medium top, heavy bottom
- Balanced blend of stick sound and chick
- Symmetrical hammering and wide-groove lathing
- Brightness and definition rated 8 out of 10 by Zildjian
A pair designed with Louie Bellson
The original design came from drummer Louie Bellson, who wanted a hi-hat with a solid beat and the perfect mix of stick and chick. Zildjian kept that idea: a top loose enough to speak under the stick, a bottom heavy enough to close the pair with a sharp snap.
Why 14" is still the starting size
At 14", the hi-hat stays quick and precise, with higher brightness than the 15" version (8 against 6 on Zildjian's Sound Lab scale). It is the size found on most drum kits, in rehearsal and in the studio alike.

Frequently asked questions
- Are New Beat hi-hats any good?
- Zildjian presents them as the most versatile hi-hats available. Their strength is balance: not too dark for rock, not too loud for jazz.
- New Beat or A Custom?
- The A Custom 14" hi-hat pairs a medium thin top with a medium bottom, in a brilliant finish: lighter and more delicate. The New Beat, with its heavy bottom, gives a firmer chick and a more solid beat.
- New Beat 14" or 15"?
- The 14" is brighter and quicker. The 15" goes lower and fills a noisy room more. For a first hi-hat or an all-round kit, the 14" is the safe choice.
