Zildjian A Medium Thin Crash 17" Crash Cymbal
The A Medium Thin Crash 17" is an in-between size crash cymbal, for the drummer who finds a 16" too short and an 18" too wide. It keeps the line's brightness with a little more sustain, and naturally slots in as a second crash.
What sets it apart
- 17" size, between the snap of the 16" and the spread of the 18"
- Stronger high end than Zildjian's Thin Crash
- Medium thin weight, opens up effortlessly
- Sustain of 6 out of 10, one notch above the 16"
The role of a second crash
With two crashes, you do not double the same sound: you start a conversation. A 16" on one side, this 17" on the other, and each accent changes colour depending on which hand strikes. On Zildjian's Sound Lab scale, the 17" loses one point of brightness (7 against 8) and gains one point of sustain (6 against 5) compared with the 16": you hear the difference without the two cymbals clashing.

Frequently asked questions
- 16" or 17" crash?
- The 17" sounds a little lower and longer than the 16". If your 16" feels too dry at the end of a phrase, the 17" fills the gap without becoming a big crash.
- How do you keep a cymbal from cracking?
- Zildjian attributes most cracks to improper technique rather than to the cymbal. Its warranty also excludes cymbals played with excessive force. Let the crash move on its stand and strike it with a loose motion rather than crushing it.
- Is a crash smaller than a ride?
- Usually, yes. In Zildjian's A series, crashes run from 14" to 20" and rides from 19" to 23". This 17" therefore sits without crowding the ride on most kits.
