Zildjian

The FX El Sonido Multi-Crash Ride 17" is a dual-purpose cymbal, crash and ride, designed for percussionists and Latin music drummers. A single cymbal above the timbales often has to do everything: accents, patterns, phrase endings. This one was built for that.

What sets it apart

  • Developed with percussionist Marc Quinones
  • Dual purpose: crash and ride in one cymbal
  • Medium thin weight, brilliant finish
  • Dryness of 7 out of 10 for a more controlled note

Born with a percussionist

Zildjian developed this model with Marc Quinones, percussionist with the Allman Brothers Band. The goal: a cymbal versatile enough for salsa, jazz, Latin music and rock. On the Sound Lab, it stands out for its dryness (7 out of 10) and definition (8): the note stays clear under the stick, and the crash does not drown the timbales or congas around it.

Frequently asked questions

What is a crash ride?
A cymbal designed to do both: you play patterns on it like a ride, and it opens up as a crash when you hit the edge. Useful when you only have room for one cymbal.
Can you add a cymbal to timbales?
Yes, it is common in salsa and Latin music: a cymbal mounted above the timbales handles accents and patterns. This El Sonido was designed with a percussionist for exactly that kind of setup.
Can you crash a ride cymbal?
On a heavy ride, the result stays hard and controlled. A crash ride like this one is made to open up freely, while keeping a defined note when you play a pattern.
