Shure A55M Shock Mount Microphone Clip
The Shure A55M is a shock mount microphone clip: an isolation mount and adapter that attach a mic with a handle about one inch in diameter to a stand. It keeps bumps and vibration from the stand, the stage or the instrument from travelling up to the mic.
What sets it apart
- Isolates the mic from vibration carried through the stand
- Inside diameter just over one inch, for SM57- or SM58-size handles
- Takes the tapered handle of an SM57, which the smaller A53M clip does not
- Also attaches to the Shure A56D drum mount
- Offered by Shure as an optional accessory for the SM58
Noise that does not travel through the air
A mic also picks up whatever touches it. Shure describes a percussion ensemble where SM57s were clamped to a marimba frame: every strike made the frame vibrate and a thump came out of the speakers. Shure's answer: the A55M, which suspends the mic instead of clamping it against the structure.
Same logic for a stand on a resonant stage, or next to a drum kit: the shock mount breaks the mechanical path between the support and the mic.
Which mics fit
Shure gives an inside diameter of "just a hair over one inch" and mics of one inch. Its knowledge base confirms the SM57, the PGA81, as well as the SM137 and KSM109. With those last two, the handle sits a little loose: it holds well horizontally, but can slowly slide out when vertical. A wrap of gaffer tape or a rubber O-ring placed 2 inches from the XLR connector solves it. The PG81, on the other hand, does not fit properly according to Shure.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between the A55M and the A53M?
- Size. Shure gives an inside diameter of 0.75 in. for the A53M and just over one inch for the A55M. The A55M therefore takes larger handles, such as the tapered handle of the SM57.
- Do the SM137 and KSM109 fit in the A55M?
- Yes, according to Shure, but with some play. Horizontal, the mic is stable; vertical, it can slide. A little gaffer tape on the handle, or a rubber O-ring 2 inches from the XLR, keeps it from coming out.
- How do I get rid of the thump from a marimba frame picked up by an SM57?
- Shure recommends replacing the rigid clip with the A55M: the mic is suspended and no longer receives the frame's vibration when the instrument is struck.
- Does the A55M fit the PG81?
- No. Shure states that none of its shock mounts, A55M, A53M or A55HM, properly holds the one-inch handle of the PG81.
