Shure A56D Drum Microphone Mount for Rims and Cymbal Stands
The Shure A56D is a clamp that mounts a microphone directly on a drum rim or on a cymbal stand tube. It replaces the mic stand around the kit: less clutter on stage, and a mic placed exactly where it needs to pick up.
What sets it apart
- Clamps onto a rim from 12.7 to 57.2 mm high
- Also clamps onto a cymbal stand from 9.5 to 28.6 mm in diameter
- L-adapter extension bent at 90° to aim the mic
- 5/8"-27 thread, the thread of standard mic clips
- Captive parts: nothing gets lost when taking it apart
The mic in the right spot, no stand needed
Every drum on a miked kit usually needs its own stand and boom. The A56D clamps onto the rim, and the mic clip screws onto its threaded post: the mic sits a few centimetres from the head, with nothing on the floor. Shure designed it for end-address mics such as the SM57, Beta 57, Beta 56 and PG57.
The same clamp also fits a cymbal stand or a drum stand. Shure advises placing the mic outside the path of the sticks and cymbals, to avoid noise and hits.
A mount, not a shock mount
The A56D holds the mic rigidly and does not filter vibration from the drum. To reduce it, Shure suggests attaching an A53M or A55M shock mount to it. The two lock nuts hold in place the plastic mic holder screwed onto the threaded part marked "Shure A56D".

Frequently asked questions
- Does the A56D pick up vibration from the drum?
- It does not filter it: Shure states that it provides no shock mounting. An A53M or A55M shock mount attaches to the A56D to reduce the vibration passed to the mic.
- Where do the A56D lock nuts go?
- On the threaded part marked "Shure A56D". They lock in position the plastic mic holder screwed onto the clamp.
- How do I mount a Beta 56 on a tom?
- Shure suggests the A56D or the A75M clamp. With another brand's claw-type clamp, the 3-inch extension tube supplied with the Beta 56 may be needed to clear the cable.
- Does the A56D work with the SM57?
- Yes. Shure names the SM57 among the intended mics, and the plastic mic holder supplied with the SM57 screws onto a stand or onto the A56D equally well.
