Shure A58WS-BLK Black Foam Windscreen for SM58 and Ball Mics
The Shure A58WS-BLK is a black foam windscreen that fits over the ball grille of an SM58, Beta 58A or PGA58. It reduces the breath and pops of a singer working right up on the mic, as well as wind noise outdoors.
What sets it apart
- Made for Shure ball mics: PGA48, PGA58, SM48, SM58, Beta 58A and 565SD
- Open-cell foam that lets the voice through and slows down gusts of air
- Rounded shape with no edge to create turbulence of its own
- Black, one of six colours in the A58WS range
- The reference the SM58 user guide lists as an optional accessory
A pop is a miniature gust of wind
According to Shure, a mic responds to any movement of air, with no way to tell a voice from a gust. The "p" and "b" sounds spoken up close are a form of wind noise: a burst of air much faster than speech. The A58WS's open-cell foam gives that air a winding path that dissipates its energy, while the sound itself passes through.
The SM58 already has a layer of foam behind its grille. Its guide still recommends adding a windscreen outside, and this is the one Shure pairs with it.
More foam is not always better
Shure points out that a foam windscreen gets more effective as its diameter grows, but that too many layers end up rolling off the highs. A single layer sized to the mic is a deliberate compromise between the voice and the protection.

Frequently asked questions
- What does a windscreen do for a microphone?
- It dissipates the energy of gusts of air before they reach the capsule. Shure explains that open-cell foam forces the air along a winding path, which reduces wind and pops, a form of wind noise.
- Does the SM58 need a windscreen or a pop filter?
- The SM58 has a built-in spherical filter that already reduces wind and breath. Its user guide still recommends adding a windscreen when the mic is used outdoors, and names the A58WS.
- Which mics does the A58WS fit?
- Shure designed it for the PGA48, PGA58, SM48, SM58, Beta 58A and 565SD, and more broadly for its vocal mics with a ball grille.
