Shure A58WS-GRN Green Foam Windscreen for Ball Mics
The Shure A58WS-GRN is the green version of the A58WS foam windscreen, designed for Shure ball-grille mics such as the SM58. Its colour is first a way to recognize a mic at a glance; the foam itself slows down wind and breath.
What sets it apart
- Green colour to pick out one mic among several
- Same foam as the black version, for the SM58, Beta 58A, PGA58, PGA48, SM48 and 565SD
- Protects the capsule of a handheld wireless mic from light rain
- Slows down gusts of wind outdoors
- Round foam with no edges, as Shure calls for in an outdoor windscreen
One mic, one colour
On a stage with several identical mics, the windscreen colour shows which one belongs to which voice, or which mic goes to which mixer input. The A58WS range comes in black, blue, grey, green, red and yellow: each colour can stand for a person or a channel.
Outdoors, against wind and rain
Shure recommends the A58WS foam to protect the capsule of a wireless mic used year-round outdoors, with a WA555 sleeve on the handle. The mic becomes rain-resistant, without being waterproof. Against wind, Shure's rule is simple: the foam must be round, with no edge that creates turbulence, and it gets more effective as its diameter grows.

Frequently asked questions
- What colours does the A58WS windscreen come in?
- The SM58 guide lists six colours: black, blue, grey, green, red and yellow. Shure's page currently shows black, blue, grey, green and red.
- How can I protect a handheld wireless mic from rain?
- Shure recommends a foam windscreen such as the A58WS for the capsule and a WA555 plastic sleeve for the handle and switches. The mic then resists rain, but it does not become waterproof.
- How can I reduce wind noise in a microphone?
- Shure describes several methods: cutting the lows, where wind rumble is concentrated, adding fine mesh or open-cell foam, and, for extreme cases, a basket with fur. For foam, the larger the diameter, the more effective it is.
