A mic made for toms
The D2 carries a VLM (Very Low Mass) capsule with a very light diaphragm that tracks transients faithfully. Its 68 Hz to 18 kHz response keeps out low-end boom, and its hypercardioid pattern limits spill from the cymbals and snare. Compact and light, it slips in between drums; the DVICE clamps hold it on the rim with no stand at all.
Placing it
Set the bottom of the grille 1 to 2 in. above the head, aimed at the centre. Pull back toward the rim for more ring; move 1 to 2 in. inside it for less ring and more overtones. Closer gives more attack, farther gives more decay. The D2s also work on congas, guitar cabinets and brass.
