Audix D4 Hypercardioid Dynamic Instrument Mic for Floor Tom
The D4 is a hypercardioid dynamic mic for low-pitched instruments: floor tom, large rack tom, small kick drum or bass cab. It takes more than 144 dB SPL and delivers low end with precision, with no power to worry about.
What sets it apart
- Hypercardioid, little cymbal bleed
- Very low mass VLM diaphragm
- Handles over 144 dB SPL
- Compact: 100 mm and 128 g
The bottom of the kit
Audix aims the D4 at sources where the low end has to stay tight: large toms, floor tom, cajon, djembe, timpani, small kick. Its 40 Hz to 18 kHz response keeps the drum's fundamental, and its very tight hypercardioid pattern limits spill from the rest of the kit. It needs no phantom power and is not bothered by it.
Where to put it
On a tom, Audix suggests setting the bottom of the grille 1 to 2 inches above the head, pointing at the centre. Pull it back toward the rim for more ring, move it closer to the head for more attack. On a cab, place it 1 to 2 inches off the grille at 90 degrees: toward the cone's edge for a warmer tone, toward the centre for more highs.
