D'addario

The D'Addario EXL140-3D holds three identical sets of 10-52 electric guitar strings. The gauges pair light trebles with heavy basses: bends stay easy up the neck, while the low strings keep their footing when you drop the tuning.

What sets it apart

  • Three plain steel trebles in .010, .013 and .017; three wound basses in .030, .042 and .052
  • Nickel-plated steel wrap wound onto a hex-shaped core the wrap grips instead of turning on
  • From the XL Nickel line: the nickel-plated steel electric strings the maker has sold since 1974, and the best-selling sets in its catalogue
  • Three individually sealed bags: open one set, the other two stay fresh

Frequently asked questions

Do these gauges suit a dropped tuning?

That is exactly what they are for. The three low strings, up to the .052, hold their tension when you drop a semitone or a full tone, where a regular set turns slack. The trebles stay at the gauges of a light set.

Is a setup needed after moving up from a thinner set?

Check neck relief and intonation. Coming from .009s or from a regular set, pull increases on the low strings: the neck bows a little further and the true notes shift. Both checks belong in the same session.

How does this differ from a regular 10-46 set?

The three trebles are the same. It is the basses that change: .030, .042 and .052 instead of thinner gauges, which means more tension and a thicker low end without making the whole set stiff.

Are the strings coated?

No. The wrap is bare, with no polymer coating. The corrosion-resistant bag protects the sets until they are opened, not afterward.
