D'Addario XTC45 XT Classical Guitar Strings, Normal Tension
The D'Addario XTC45 is a six-string classical guitar set in normal tension, with all three wound basses treated against corrosion. It is the brand's best-selling tension, chosen for the way it balances comfort under the fingers, rich tone and projection.
What sets it apart
- Normal tension: 81.1 lb across all six strings
- Composite basses on a multifilament core, wound in silver-plated copper with XT treatment
- Pro-Arté nylon monofilament trebles
- Tie-end strings, full-scale format
Who normal tension suits
A student who picks up the guitar every day, or a player working through long pieces, feels string tension in the fretting hand long before hearing it. At 16.2 lb on the high E and 14.7 lb on the low E, the XTC45 is the most forgiving of the three silver-plated copper XT sets: barre chords take less effort and vibrato answers without a fight.
What the XT treatment changes
A wound string collects grime between its windings and loses its overtones well before it breaks. D'Addario applies its XT treatment to each of the three basses, wrapped in silver-plated copper over a multifilament core. The trebles stay untreated Pro-Arté nylon.
The set comes out of the company's New York plant in a resealable, recyclable VCI bag that keeps the strings protected until they go on the guitar.

Frequently asked questions
- Normal or hard tension: which should I pick?
- D'Addario calls normal its best-selling tension, for its balance of tone, comfort and projection. The hard version, the XTC46, adds 6.3 lb overall; it suits a player after more projection whose fretting hand can keep up without tiring.
- Do treated strings feel different?
- D'Addario says the XT treatment keeps the sound and feel of an untreated string. It only covers the basses anyway: the picking hand mostly touches plain nylon trebles.
- How do I make a set of strings last?
- The company recommends wiping the strings down after every session. The bass treatment slows corrosion, but it does not replace that habit.
