Shure DH5T/O-MTQG DuraPlex Omnidirectional Headset Mic, Tan (TA4F)
The Shure DH5T/O-MTQG is a headset microphone: a very small 5 mm mic at the end of a boom attached to a light headband, picking up the voice from every direction. Tan coloured to stay discreet, it plugs into the bodypack transmitter of a wireless system through a TA4F connector. It stands up to sweat and dust (IP57 rating) and keeps up with an actor, a singer or an instructor who moves and sweats.
What sets it apart
- IP57 rating: protected against dust and temporary immersion, and therefore against sweat
- 5 mm subminiature omnidirectional MEMS capsule, discreet on the face
- Thin 1.6 mm cable that resists kinks and can be painted
- Reversible boom: the mic can be worn on the left or the right
- Presence cap included for added clarity on the spoken voice
Made for sweat and dust
DuraPlex, the subminiature mic line the DH5 belongs to, is Shure's first line certified IP57. According to Shure, the 5 means dust can get in, but not in an amount that harms operation; the 7, that water does not get in in a harmful amount during immersion at one metre for 30 minutes. The mic can be cleaned with distilled water and a mild detergent.
A thin cable that can be painted
The 1.6 mm cable, which Shure calls Shure Plex, is the same one used in TwinPlex, its premium line of subminiature mics. In its 2020 launch announcement, Shure states that it flexed, stretched and pulled it to the limit in internal tests to simulate years of heavy use. Its spiral construction makes it immune to kinks and memory effect, and a dual redundant ground acts as a second shield. It takes theatre paints, pens and polishes, so it can blend into a costume or makeup.
Fitting the headset
First set the headband width, then the ear hooks. The boom slides into its pivot, which turns to set height and length, then bends into position. To move the boom to the other side, remove both pivots by squeezing the earpieces toward the headband. The clear frame suits every DH5 colour.
The presence cap and windscreens
The presence cap adds 3 to 4 dB around 10 kHz, which brings the spoken voice forward. Shure supplies two windscreens: the slide-on one is used with the cap, the snap-on one without it, otherwise the cap can get stuck inside.
Connection
The MTQG version ends in a TA4F connector with a TQG locking collar, made for every Shure bodypack transmitter with a TA4F input. The guide also gives TA5F wiring for Lectrosonics transmitters. For wired use, Shure offers the optional RPM400TQG XLR preamp. The recommended bias voltage is 5 V DC, 2.6 V minimum.

Frequently asked questions
- DH5 or TH53: what's the difference?
- The TH53 is another Shure subminiature headset mic, from the premium TwinPlex line. The DH5 uses the same 1.6 mm cable and adds IP57 certification against water and dust.
- Which windscreen goes on the DH5?
- With the presence cap, the slide-on windscreen. Without the cap, the snap-on windscreen. Shure advises against snapping the latter over the cap, which could get stuck.
- Is there a cardioid version of the DH5?
- No. Shure offers the DH5 only as an omnidirectional mic, in three colours (black, cocoa, tan) and two connectors (TA4F and LEMO).
- Can just the boom and cable be replaced?
- Yes. Shure sells the tan boom and cable assembly with MTQG connector as RPMDH5T/O-MTQG, along with pivots, boom mount, headband frame, caps and windscreens.
