The pull rod determines how high the cymbals can go. A long rod allows a high hi-hat, well clear of the snare; a short rod forces a low position, but avoids a piece of metal sticking up 30 cm above the cymbals.

Both are in the box, 21 in and 15 in. You choose according to your playing height, and keep the other for the day your setup changes. It is rare for a manufacturer to supply both.

With a central linkage, the rod runs down the middle, exactly where your left foot goes and where the drive shaft of a double pedal has to pass. You end up playing at an angle to avoid it.

The offset moves that linkage to the side. The footboard stays clear, your foot sits straight, and the space under the stand opens up. The pull stays direct: no cable, no extra linkage, so nothing stretches between the footboard and the cymbal.

A clutch that works loose lets the top cymbal slide down gradually. The gap between the two cymbals closes, the sound closes with it, and the drummer spends the night compensating with the foot.

The locking clutch holds the setting you found. Together with the hinged memory locks on the tubes, it makes this stand something you set up identically every time rather than a setting to redo.
