Ten inches, and why the diameter matters
A six-inch pad fits in a stick bag, but it makes you aim. On a fast rudiment, part of your attention goes into accuracy instead of into the rhythm, and you end up learning to play small.
Ten inches changes that. The surface is wide enough for your hands to cross without getting in each other's way, for edge strokes and centre strokes to really exist, and for the work to carry over to the kit without relearning your range of motion.
The stand changes more than you would think
A pad on a table forces the table's height and a flat angle. Yet the height of the seat relative to the playing surface sets the angle of your forearms, and so the way your wrist works.
Practising for a long time on a surface that is too high builds a posture you will have to undo later. A dedicated stand takes the pad off the table and puts it where a snare drum would be, which means you practise in the position you will actually use.
The bag, or the difference between a tool and an object
A pad without a bag stays at home. A pad you can sling over your shoulder goes on tour, waits in the dressing room, comes out while you wait for soundcheck. The difference between the two is measured in hours of practice per year.
