Bringing short sounds closer to the snare
A splash is for punctuation, often in mid-phrase. Placed at the end of a boom arm a metre away, it forces an arm movement that breaks the motion. Placed thirty centimetres from the snare, it is within reach without leaving the pattern you are playing.
