Bringing it closer instead of pushing it away
A long arm pushes the cymbal away, which is sometimes exactly what you do not want. On a tight kit, or when the cymbal has to fall under the left hand without moving the shoulder, nine inches put the metal right where your stroke already goes.

Overhang, the mechanical case for the short arm
A cymbal exerts torque in proportion to its distance from the anchor point. Cutting that distance from fourteen to nine inches cuts the load passed to the bracket and the shell by the same proportion.
