The sinking boom, and what people wrongly blame
When a cymbal ends up lower at the end of a gig, the first suspect is the receiver's clamp. Often the real culprit is elsewhere: the boom itself sinks millimetre by millimetre under the strokes, because nothing stops it.
A lock clamped just above the receiver eliminates that movement. The boom rests on it, and the friction of the clamp no longer has to carry the load on its own.
A diameter that tells you what the lock is for
Half an inch is the size of the brand's cymbal arms, booms and accessory rods. A lock of this diameter is not meant for setting a stand's height; that is the job of the larger locks that clamp onto tubes.
It is for controlling what happens above the stand: how deep a boom goes into an eye bolt, where an arm sits in its receiver, the stop on an accessory rod.

- The diameter, and so the use. The 3/4 in goes on stand tubes; the 1/2 in goes on arms, booms and rods.
- Do I have to remove the boom to install the lock?
- No. The hinge opens and closes around the arm where it is, without taking anything apart.
- Is one lock enough to hold a heavy cymbal?
- It stops the sinking, which is already a lot. The receiver's clamp is still what holds the boom sideways.
