A closed hi-hat has more than one sound
Between two cymbals clamped hard together and two cymbals barely touching lies a whole family of sounds: the dry chick, the short sizzle, the lingering wash. On a closed hi-hat, that setting is usually changed with a key, so never while you are playing.
The lever changes that. The pressure between the two cymbals is corrected in one move, in the middle of a song, to tighten up for the chorus and loosen for the verse.
