Knurling against rotation, not against slipping
A clamp tightened on a smooth tube holds its height well, but nothing really stops the arm from turning on itself. Under the off-centre load of an accessory, that turning happens slowly: the item tilts over the course of the night without you ever seeing when it starts.
Knurling turns the grip into an interlock. The clamp bites into the ridges instead of resting on a smooth surface, and the orientation stays where you set it.

A straight rod forces the accessory to stay in line with the clamping point. The L offsets the load to the side, which lets you place a drum or accessory next to the supporting tube rather than above it.
