Audix i5 Cardioid Dynamic Instrument Microphone
The i5 is a cardioid dynamic instrument mic, the one you clip to a snare, push up against a guitar cab or aim at a trumpet bell. Compact and built in cast zinc, it takes 140 dB SPL and needs no power at all.

On snare and toms
Audix suggests starting 2 inches above the head, capsule aimed at the middle of the drum. Tilt it toward the rim to bring in more crack; some engineers set it almost on the head for a very tight sound. On a tom or conga, move in for attack and back off to let the overtones ring. The cardioid pickup helps keep each part of the kit separate.
Guitar, bass and horns
On a cab, set it 1 to 2 inches from the grille cloth at 90 degrees, facing the speaker: toward the edge of the cone the tone gets rounder, toward the centre it gets brighter. For trumpet or sax, Audix suggests 1 to 3 inches from the bell on a loud stage, farther for jazz or classical. Keep 2 to 3 feet between two mics to avoid phase trouble.
