Zildjian

The K Sweet 23" Ride is a large, dark, medium thin ride cymbal built to fill the room. It is for the jazz or big-ensemble drummer who wants a broad, low, highly defined ride that can carry a whole orchestra.

What sets it apart

  • A large 23" diameter, low and broad sound
  • Definition and sustain rated 8 out of 10
  • Brightness of 4 out of 10: the darker of the two K Sweet Rides
  • Medium thin weight, crashable despite its size

Two inches that change the scale

According to Zildjian, the bigger the cymbal, the louder, lower and longer it is. Next to the 21", the 23" loses two points of brightness but gains a point of definition and sustain: the pattern stays clear, and the wash unfolds far behind every stroke.

Placing it right

A 23" ride needs room. Mount it a little higher and a little further out than a standard ride, so it does not hide the floor tom and you can reach both its body and its bell without raising your shoulder.

Frequently asked questions

What size ride cymbal is best for jazz?
There is no rule, but a large ride with a broad wash is a common choice in jazz. This 23" offers one, with a definition that keeps the pattern readable.
Where should you position a 23" ride?
A little higher and further out than a standard ride, above the floor tom, so the body and the bell are both easy to reach.
How do you play a big ride more quietly?
Play on the body rather than near the edge, with lighter sticks or brushes. A 23" is still a broad cymbal, though: it is not made for very low volume.
