Zildjian K HiHats 14" Hi-Hat Cymbal Pair
The K HiHats 14" is a pair of dark, low-pitched hi-hat cymbals with a deep, solid foot "chick". It responds quickly at every dynamic: you can whisper a closed eighth-note pattern or open up hard, and the hats keep up.
What sets it apart
- The recognizable K sound, dark and low
- Deep, solid foot "chick"
- Quick response from pianissimo to fortissimo
- Medium top, medium-heavy bottom
Two cymbals, two jobs
Zildjian publishes a Sound Lab rating for each half of the pair, and the gap is telling. The top alone is fairly soft (brightness 6, sustain 4): it is what you hear under the stick. The heavier bottom alone climbs to 10 for definition and 8 for sustain: it supplies the crisp snap when the pedal closes the pair.
Together, the two cymbals make a balanced pair: brightness 7, definition 6, sustain 6.
Why a K instead of a bright pair
A bright pair cuts easily, sometimes too much on a microphone. The K hi-hat stays low and dark, which makes it versatile: it blends into a jazz trio as well as a rock band without dominating the mix.

Frequently asked questions
- K HiHats or A New Beat?
- The New Beat is symmetrically hammered and sounds bright and expressive (brightness 8 at 14"). The K HiHats is darker (7) and lower. To cut through a loud band, the New Beat; for a warm, softer sound, the K.
- Why is the bottom cymbal heavier?
- According to Zildjian, a slightly heavier bottom firmly supports the top and balances the pair's "chick" and wash. That is the case here: medium top, medium-heavy bottom.
- 13" or 14" hi-hats?
- The 13" K is more precise under the stick (definition 8 versus 6) at the same brightness. The 14" remains the most common size and gives a fuller "chick".
