Latin Percussion LPA211 Aspire Large Wood Block with Striker
The LPA211 is the large Aspire wood block, made of hardwood and supplied with a wooden striker. Lower in pitch than the small model in the series, it is meant for beginners and students, and its mounting holes let you fit it on a 3/8-inch rod with the LP373 mount.
What sets it apart
- Hardwood, lower voice
- Wooden striker supplied
- Multiple mounting holes
- Designed for beginners
The low voice of the block
A wood block produces a short, dry click. The bigger it is, the lower that click sits: the large Aspire model gives a darker knock than the small LPA210. Used together, the two blocks make a high and low pair, handy for two-voice patterns or for imitating a horse trotting in a children's song.
On the table or on a stand
You can play the block resting on a surface, or fix it using its mounting holes. With the LP373 mount, sold separately, it screws onto a 3/8-inch rod, which puts it next to a drum kit or a percussion setup. That leaves the student both hands free to play.

Frequently asked questions
- How does a wood block make its sound?
- The block is hollowed out: when you strike its surface, the air in the cavity resonates and gives a dry click.
- What is this instrument called?
- A wood block, or woodblock; in Latin music you will also hear of salsa blocks or jam blocks for the plastic versions.
- How is it different from a two-tone block?
- A two-tone block has two chambers, high and low; here you get the same pair by adding the small LPA210 to this large block.
