Hohner

The Hohner Marine Band 1896 in A is Hohner's 10-hole diatonic blues harp, still nailed together as it was at the start. In A, it handles blues and rock in E.

What sets it apart

  • Reed plates and covers fixed with nails, the old way
  • E chord when you draw on holes 1 to 4
  • Pearwood comb lacquered twice
  • Made in Germany, like the whole Marine Band series

Nailed, not screwed

On the Marine Band 1896, Hohner still attaches the reed plates and covers with nails, keeping the look and feel of the instrument patented in 1896. Its sibling, the Marine Band Deluxe, is screwed together throughout, which makes maintenance easier.

In A, hole 1 blow starts on A3, below middle C: the third-lowest of the twelve standard keys. Drawing on the first four holes gives B, E, G sharp and B, an E chord. Hole 2 draw and hole 3 blow both sound that same E.

Frequently asked questions

Marine Band in A: which blues key?
Blues in E. Holes 1 to 4 drawn make an E chord, and E sits on hole 2 draw as well as hole 3 blow.
Is the Marine Band held together with nails or screws?
The 1896 is nailed, plates and covers alike. For a screwed model that is easier to take apart, Hohner offers the Marine Band Deluxe.
Marine Band or Special 20?
The Marine Band has a pearwood comb and nailed construction. The Special 20 has a plastic comb and recessed plates that make the mouthpiece more comfortable.
