Hohner

The Hohner Marine Band 1896 in D is a 10-hole diatonic harmonica that plays blues in A on the draw. D is the eighth of Hohner's twelve standard keys, a step above C.

What sets it apart

  • A chord drawn on holes 1 to 4
  • D4 on hole 1, eighth key going up
  • Curved covers and side vents
  • Pearwood comb and mouthpiece

Getting the low draw notes to sound

Plenty of beginners find the low draw holes sound flat or refuse to speak. Hohner points out that the instrument is rarely to blame: the mouth and throat are often too closed to resonate at the right wavelength. Breathing gently from the diaphragm instead of sucking, with the jaw dropped and the throat open, sorts out most cases.

In D, those low draw holes give E, A, C sharp (which Hohner writes as D flat) and E: an A chord. That is where blues in A lives, starting from hole 2 draw.

Frequently asked questions

What harmonica do I need for blues in A?
A D harmonica like this one, played in 2nd position: its draw holes 1 to 4 form an A chord.
Why do my low draw notes sound bad?
According to Hohner, it is mostly technique: open your throat and jaw, and breathe gently from the diaphragm rather than sucking hard.
Marine Band 1896 or Marine Band Deluxe?
The 1896 is nailed, with side-vented covers. The Deluxe is screwed together and its covers also open at the back for more volume.
