Hohner

The Hohner Marine Band 1896 in G is the lowest-pitched Marine Band among the standard keys: a 10-hole diatonic for blues in D and melodies in G.

What sets it apart

  • G3 on hole 1: the lowest of the 12 standard keys
  • D major when you draw on the first four holes
  • 10-hole Richter tuning
  • Lower still: the Marine Band Thunderbird

Joseph Richter's tuning

In the 1820s, the Bohemian musician Joseph Richter came up with a practical way to tune the harmonica, built to combine simple chords with single-note folk melodies. Hohner points out that his system is still the benchmark and still shapes the diatonic sound, bent blues notes included.

In G, the blow gives G, B and D; drawn, the first four holes sound A, D, F sharp, A, which makes a D chord. To go lower than G3, Hohner offers the Marine Band Thunderbird, tuned an octave below the standard models.

What tuning does the Marine Band use?
Richter tuning, devised in the 1820s and still the diatonic standard. Hohner also offers the Marine Band in natural minor and harmonic minor.
