Why one mallet per drum diameter
In a bass drum line, every player carries a different drum: the small ones give the high notes, the large ones hold down the low end. A single mallet size for the whole line would produce uneven tones and a balance that cannot be set.
So the manufacturer offers five sizes. This one opens the series, on the side of the smallest drums, where head mass has to stay modest so it does not choke a small head.
Extra-hard felt, and what it fixes outdoors
A soft mallet head flattens on contact and delays the attack. Outdoors, where nothing sends the sound back, that delay becomes a mushy note that does not lock in with the snare line.
A very dense felt does the opposite: it returns the energy immediately. The attack cuts through the brass and gives the rhythmic reference the whole ensemble follows. That is why outdoor marching uses hard mallet heads.
A shaft that thins out, then thickens again
The hickory in this family is turned with a taper at each end: 0.780 in in the hand, a narrower centre, then back to 0.790 in just before the head. The manufacturer explains that this front swell adds weight to the throw, for a fuller sound.
The thin section, for its part, lightens the centre. The mallet lifts like a light object and lands like a heavy one.
