Shure

The Shure Nexadyne 5 (NXN5) is a supercardioid dynamic microphone designed to mic a guitar amp. It reproduces the speaker naturally, harmonics, breakup texture and dynamics included, while isolating the guitar from the drums, the monitors and the bass cabinet.

What sets it apart

  • Revonic dual-transducer technology, patented by Shure
  • Consistent supercardioid pattern with strong off-axis rejection
  • Compact side-address design that hangs in front of the amp or clips to a stand
  • Low-profile black finish, nearly invisible to the audience
  • Die-cast aluminum housing, built for touring

Two transducers instead of one

The Nexadyne 5 houses two matched transducers, mechanically identical and wired out of phase. The top one captures the amp's sound; the bottom one, connected to the first, cancels mechanical vibration and tightens the pattern. The result, according to Shure: less handling noise, a consistent pattern that limits stage bleed, and a signal already shaped that needs less EQ at the board.

Hung on the cabinet or on a stand

The mic can hang in front of the amp by its cable, or mount on a stand with the supplied A25E clip. Shure's guide gives three pointers: at the centre of the speaker cone, bass and mids stand out; moving away from the centre or angling the mic brings the highs forward. When hung, the cable is secured to the cabinet with gaffer tape so the mic does not slip during the show.

From a cranked half stack to a clean amp

Shure intends it for every cabinet, from a high-gain amp at full volume to a pristine clean amp, with an uncoloured reproduction. It belongs to the Nexadyne family, which also includes mics for vocals, kick drum, toms and snare. On the connection side, the preamp should present an input impedance of at least 1000 ohms, which most modern preamps meet.

Frequently asked questions

What is Revonic technology?
It is Shure's two-transducer design: two identical elements, wired out of phase, that cancel unwanted vibration. It reduces mechanical noise, stabilizes the pattern and delivers a sound that needs less processing.
What is the frequency response of the Nexadyne 5?
50 Hz to 16 kHz, according to Shure's user guide.
How should the Nexadyne 5 be placed in front of an amp?
Shure suggests trying several angles and positions by ear. At the centre of the cone, the sound gains bass and mids; off-centre or angled, it gains highs.
Which preamp suits the Nexadyne 5?
Any mic preamp with an input impedance of at least 1000 ohms, which covers most modern preamps. Being a dynamic mic, it does not need phantom power.
