Marshall

The Marshall The Guv'nor is an overdrive pedal first released in 1988 and reissued exactly: a soft, slightly compressed overdrive, a three-band EQ and an insert loop for placing an effect inside the pedal.

What sets it apart

  • Full EQ: bass, middle and treble
  • Separate gain and level controls
  • Send and return insert loop
  • Smooth, slightly compressed drive
  • Mild steel housing, original coloured knobs
  • Designed and made in the United Kingdom

Marshall distortion from the late eighties

When it came out in 1988, The Guv'nor set the bar for the distortion pedals that followed; its sound shaped the late eighties and the nineties. The reissue reproduces the circuit, the housing shape and even the individually coloured knobs of the original.

The result: smooth drive, with just enough compression for notes to hold without getting squashed.

Five knobs and a loop

Unlike many pedals with a single tone knob, The Guv'nor offers separate bass, middle and treble, on top of gain and level. You shape the sound as you would on an amp's front panel.

Round the back, a Y insert loop lets you patch an effect inside the pedal; you need a Y cable for that, sold separately.

Frequently asked questions

What is the insert loop for?
It lets you insert an effect, a delay for instance, inside the pedal, after the EQ. It runs on a single jack, with a Y cable.
Does the reissue sound like the original?
Marshall copied the circuit; only parts such as the pots and jacks changed, without changing the values.
The Guv'nor or the DriveMaster?
The DriveMaster is a reworked Guv'nor without the insert loop. The Guv'nor keeps the loop and its slightly grainier character.
