Shure PGA56-LC Cardioid Dynamic Snare and Tom Microphone (No Cable)
The Shure PGA56-LC is a compact cardioid dynamic microphone for snare and toms. It mounts on a swivel joint with a quick-release latch that adjusts in seconds, and the LC version comes without a cable, with a zipper pouch.
What sets it apart
- Flat-response cartridge for clear reproduction of the source, from 50 to 15,000 Hz
- Swivel joint with quick-release latch, inspired by bicycle component locking
- Cardioid pattern that picks up the target drum and rejects unwanted noise
- Black metallic finish, grille included, for an unobtrusive look
- Zipper pouch included for storage and transport
The quick-release latch
Open the lever, position the mic, then press the lever back toward the mic to lock it. If the joint is too stiff or too loose, open the lever and adjust the bolt on the opposite side with a flat-head screwdriver. Shure also lists the AP56DM drum mount among the PGA56 accessories.
Above the snare and toms
Shure's guide places one mic on each tom, or one between each pair of toms, 2.5 to 7.5 cm above the heads, aimed at the top head: medium attack, full and balanced sound. On a double-headed tom, you can also remove the bottom head and place the mic inside, pointing up. On the snare, 2.5 to 7.5 cm above the rim gives the most snap from the stick. Monitors go directly behind the mic.
A check before every performance
Shure asks for the grille to be checked before every use to make sure it is screwed on tight: vibration and accidental stick hits can loosen it and cut the signal. The grille can be replaced if needed (RPMP56G). The mic operates from -29 to 74 °C and from 0 to 95% relative humidity.

Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between the PGA56-LC and the PGA56-XLR?
- The cable. The PGA56-LC comes without a cable, with its swivel joint and zipper pouch. The PGA56-XLR adds a 4.5 m XLR-XLR cable. The microphone is the same.
