Shure RK143G Replacement Grille for SM58
The Shure RK143G is the original replacement grille for the SM58 vocal microphone, wired or wireless. It replaces a dented or crushed grille and gives the mic back the protection Shure designed for its cartridge.
What sets it apart
- Genuine Shure part, listed for the wired and wireless SM58
- Spherical steel mesh grille, like the one supplied with the mic
- Screws on in place of the old one
- Designed to deform under impact rather than pass the shock on to the cartridge
A grille that dents on purpose
Shure explains that the SM58 grille is there first to protect the cartridge. It is designed to absorb impact, a bit like the crumple zone of a car: after a drop, the mic keeps working, and the dented grille has simply done its job. It bends without leaving a sharp edge.
A marked grille does not stop the mic from working. In the same article, Shure writes that replacing it restores the SM58's look and helps it serve for more years.
Replacing it
The SM58 grille unscrews; the RK143G screws on in its place in a few seconds. The SM58 guide reminds users not to cover any part of the grille with a hand while in use, as this affects the mic's sound. For outdoor use, Shure offers the optional A58WS foam windscreen. The SM57, Shure's instrument microphone, takes another grille of a different design: the RK244G.
