Focusrite Scarlett 16i16 4th Gen USB-C Audio Interface
The Scarlett 16i16 4th Gen is a desktop USB-C audio interface that acts as the connection hub of a production studio: two mic preamps, six line inputs, four outputs, two headphone outputs, plus ADAT and S/PDIF ports so you can grow without replacing it. It is aimed at the producer who already owns synths, outboard effects or a preamp, and wants everything to stay plugged in.
What sets it apart
- Two 69 dB preamps and four fixed-level line inputs
- ADAT port: eight more channels with an external preamp
- Coaxial S/PDIF in and out
- Two independent headphone outputs, each with its own mix
- MIDI In and Out
- USB-C bus powered, optional 15 W supply accepted
Fewer preamps, more connections
The 16i16 does not bet on mic count: it takes two. Its strength lies elsewhere, in the four fixed line inputs that host keyboards, modules and drum machines, and in the four outputs that send audio to outboard effects or monitors.
For the producer who works mostly with hardware and one voice at a time, that is the right balance: everything stays connected, and nothing gets unplugged between sessions.
Growing through ADAT
When you need more mics, for a drum kit for example, you connect an eight-channel preamp with an ADAT output to the optical port. Its eight channels join the 16i16's in your software. The coaxial S/PDIF input and output, for their part, take a processor or a preamp with a digital output.
Two players, two headphones
Each headphone output has its own amp and its own mix in Focusrite Control 2. The singer hears more vocal, the guitarist more guitar, with no splitter and no compromise. Auto Gain, Clip Safe and both Air modes remain available on the two preamps.

Compared with other manufacturers
Desktop interfaces with digital ports from other manufacturers, and what sets them apart from the 16i16:
| Manufacturer | Comparable model | How it differs |
|---|---|---|
| Audient | iD44 MkII | Four console preamps and two ADAT inputs |
| MOTU | M6 | Four preamps, no ADAT port |
| Steinberg | UR44C | Four D-PRE preamps, built-in DSP effects |
| Arturia | AudioFuse | Two DiscretePRO preamps, with ADAT and S/PDIF |
Frequently asked questions
- Scarlett 16i16 or 18i16: which should I choose?
- They share the digital ports and the two headphone outputs. The 18i16 has four preamps instead of two and eight line inputs instead of six. If you rarely record more than two mics at once, the 16i16 is enough.
- Can the 16i16 be rack-mounted?
- No, it is a desktop unit. In the Scarlett 4th Gen range, only the 18i20 mounts in a rack.
- Does it need an external power supply?
- Not with a USB-C port that can deliver 3 A. Otherwise, it accepts a 15 W USB-C supply plugged into the back.
- How do I add more preamps?
- With an external preamp that has an ADAT output, connected to the optical port: up to eight more channels, which show up as 16i16 inputs.
