Focusrite Scarlett OctoPre Dynamic 8-Channel Mic Preamp with Compression
The Focusrite Scarlett OctoPre Dynamic is a 1U eight-channel mic preamp with an analog compressor on every channel. It tames the peaks of a singer or a snare before conversion, and its ADAT link works both ways: eight inputs to the interface, eight analog outputs coming back.
What sets it apart
- Single-knob VCA compressor on each of the eight channels
- MORE button that doubles the ratio, from 2:1 to 4:1
- ADAT in and out, with ADAT-to-line mode
- Eight 2nd-generation Scarlett preamps, two instrument inputs
- Word clock in and out, sync to internal, ADAT or word clock
One compressor per channel, one knob per compressor
The COMPRESS knob combines threshold and make-up gain: as you turn it, you compress more without the output level dropping. Attack is fixed at 1.2 ms and release at 28 ms, settings that catch the transients of a vocal or a bass without pumping. A yellow LED lights as soon as the compressor reduces gain.
The ratio is 2:1 in normal mode; the MORE button raises it to 4:1 for heavier compression, useful on a snare or an uneven bass performance. Each channel's meter shows the level after the compressor.
The compression is printed
The compressor works in analog, before the converter: what reaches your software is already compressed. It is a tracking decision, like on a studio console, that protects against digital clipping but cannot be undone at mixdown.
To keep a channel untouched, leave its knob on OFF: the compressor is then out of the circuit. A red O/L LED on each channel flags an overload at the input of the compression stage.
Eight analog outputs on the way back
Unlike the standard Scarlett OctoPre, the Dynamic has two ADAT optical inputs. In ADAT>LINE mode, the eight channels received from the interface are converted to analog and sent to the eight TRS line outputs. The preamps keep sending their channels out the optical outputs.
You can send eight tracks back to a console for an analog mix, or feed extra monitor speakers. With the mode off, the line outputs mirror the preamps for stand-alone use on stage.
Sync and form factor
The SYNC switch selects internal clock, ADAT or word clock, with BNC jacks in and out. Eight channels pass up to 96 kHz (two cables at 88.2 and 96 kHz), four at 176.4 or 192 kHz.
The 3.37 kg 1U chassis has a built-in universal power supply from 100 to 240 V. Phantom power is switched in groups of four inputs.

What it's for
- Recording a band live without clipping on the peaks
- Controlling the dynamics of a DI'd bass or guitar
- Sending eight tracks back to a console for an analog mix
- Compressed preamp in front of a live console
Compared with other manufacturers
Eight-channel preamps with an ADAT link are common; those with built-in compression on every channel are much rarer.
| Model | Channels | Built-in compression | ADAT link |
|---|---|---|---|
| Focusrite Scarlett OctoPre Dynamic | 8 | Yes, on every channel | Input and output |
| Behringer ADA8200 | 8 | No | Input and output |
| PreSonus DigiMax DP88 | 8 | No | Input and output |
| Audient ASP880 | 8 | No | Output |
Frequently asked questions
- What's the difference between the Scarlett OctoPre and the OctoPre Dynamic?
- The Dynamic adds an analog compressor on every channel and ADAT inputs: it converts eight channels from the interface to its line outputs. The standard Scarlett OctoPre only sends to the interface.
- Can I turn the compressor off?
- Yes, channel by channel: set the COMPRESS knob to OFF and the channel passes uncompressed. Because the compressor works before conversion, whatever is compressed gets recorded as is.
- How do I sync the OctoPre Dynamic with my interface?
- Set both units to the same sample rate. The OctoPre can be the clock (internal setting, interface on ADAT) or follow the interface through its ADAT input or word clock.
- Can I connect it directly to a computer?
- No, it has no USB port. It connects by optical cable to an interface with an ADAT input.
