On a wood tip stick, two things wear out side by side: the tip, which rounds off, and the shoulder, which splits. With a nylon tip, the first one drops out of the picture. The polymer keeps its shape long after the wood next to it has started to suffer.

That leaves the shaft. It is what takes the metal rim, and it is what the band protects. This pair solves the two problems with two separate means, instead of applying the same fix everywhere.

Can the nylon tip come off?

That is the classic worry with this kind of tip, and the manufacturer publishes no durability data on it. What can be verified comes down to construction: an added tip creates a joint that a tip turned from the wood does not have.

Do nylon tips damage cymbals?

No. Nylon is harder than wood, so the attack is drier, but wear on the metal comes from the edge struck with the shoulder, not from the tip.

Why protect the stick if the tip is nylon?

Because a stick this size breaks at the shoulder, against the snare drum rim. A synthetic tip changes nothing at that spot.
