Lengthening a stick moves its centre of mass away from the hand. For the same stroke, the tip travels farther and arrives faster: the hit is more powerful without the drummer working harder.

There is a flip side. A longer stick takes a little more effort to bring back up, and it is less forgiving of a misplaced grip. It is a trade, not a free advantage — it suits players who hit hard and already have settled technique.

A barrel tip has a cylindrical side topped by a cap. When the cap wears, the side remains and keeps offering the same contact width. The tone therefore changes slowly, where a pointed tip changes sound as soon as it dulls.

On a stick built to last, that choice matters: it called for a geometry that stays usable for the whole life of the stick, not just its first few hours.

A longer stick reaches the snare drum rim with more momentum: the same wrist rotation gives the end of the stick more speed. The rimshot gets more solid, and so does the impact the wood absorbs.

That is where the three-inch band comes in. The manufacturer places it in the rimshot zone, the one it identifies as the usual breaking point. Getting the extra reach without paying for it right away in broken sticks is exactly the problem the series sets out to solve.

What does “Power” mean on Vater sticks?

Half an inch more length than the reference size, for reach and weight. Here: 16.5 in and 0.580 in, where the 5A measures 16 in and 0.570 in, with a teardrop tip rather than a barrel.

Can you really feel that extra half inch?

Yes, especially on the way back up. You gain reach and punch, and lose a little quickness on very tight patterns.

Do I need to change my grip with this size?

Not the grip itself, but often where you hold it: the balance point moves back, and many drummers move their fingers back a few millimetres.

Is a barrel tip good on thin cymbals?

It offers a wide contact area, so a full sound rather than a pointed one. On a thin cymbal, that means plenty of body and little harshness.
