Vater

The VHCCDW is a pair of thin, long signature drumsticks: a hickory shaft of only 0.530 in, stretched to 16.5 in, with an acorn tip. The combination is unusual, and it gives you reach without the weight that normally comes with it.

What sets it apart

  • 0.530 in shaft, well below the common sizes
  • 16.5 in long
  • Gradual taper down to the acorn tip
  • Response and dynamics claimed across all styles
  • American hickory
  • Designed with a studio and touring drummer

Thin and long: why this combination is rare

Making a stick longer adds wood, and so weight. Most long models compensate by keeping a generous diameter, and end up heavy.

Here, the manufacturer does the opposite: it takes from the diameter what it adds to the length. The result is a stick that reaches far without weighing in your hand, which suits drummers who change register often within the same gig.

A gradual taper, or the art of no surprises

A progressive taper spreads flex over a long stretch of the shaft. The stick bends gently instead of flexing all at once at one precise spot. The rebound is therefore even, from the lightest stroke to the hardest.

That is what lets you go from a soft, brushed-feel passage to a chorus without changing how the stick feels. That consistency is exactly what you want from a model meant to cover several genres.

Who this design is for

The working drummer who moves between very different styles without changing tools will get a lot out of it. If you are after raw volume above all, look toward a more generous diameter: this slim shaft is not made to overpower a stage.

Frequently asked questions

Will a thin drumstick hold up at a gig?
On heads and cymbals, yes. Repeated rimshots are what shorten its life, and there any reduced diameter is at a disadvantage.
What is the extra length for?
To reach distant cymbals without stretching your arm, and to move the balance point toward the back, which makes the rebound livelier.
Are these sticks good for small hands?
They are often a good starting point: 0.530 in closes easily, even in a small hand.
Can you play loud with this diameter?
Yes, but with a bigger motion. At equal technique, the maximum volume stays below that of a thick shaft.
