The neck, the bottleneck
Between the shoulder and the tip, the shaft passes through a neck. It is the narrowest section, so the one that flexes most with every stroke. A thin neck makes a stick flexible and responsive; a thick neck makes it stiff and loud.

A rounded barrel, between two worlds
