Half an inch, two effects
Lengthening a stick does more than add reach. It also increases the moment of inertia: for the same motion, the tip arrives with more energy. Half an inch is enough to feel it.
The second effect is leverage. The hand sits a little farther from the point of impact, so the same wrist motion produces a fuller stroke. That is why a long stick is less tiring at the same volume.
Why not simply make the shaft thicker
The obvious way to hit harder would be to move up to a 2B. But a thick shaft slows the fingers and makes fast passages hard work.
Lengthening offers another route: the power comes from geometry rather than from mass in the hand. You keep the speed of a 5B and get the output of a bigger stick.
The raw shaft is not a detail here
A long stick exerts more torque on the hand. Without lacquer, the sanded hickory holds back that movement and the stick stays in place, even when the palm gets damp.
