What this size really allows
At 0.660 in over more than 17 in, this stick transfers an amount of energy no 5B comes close to. The drums come out big, crashes open up on the first stroke, and the acoustic volume on tap is considerable.
In exchange, speed disappears. Fast passages get heavy, and the hand has to drive a mass that does not come back on its own. It is a power tool, and it owns that.
The second use: practising with weight
Many drummers use a thick stick to work at home, then go back to their usual size on stage. The principle is that of any training weight: the normal motion feels easier afterwards.
Caution is still in order. Forcing with an unusual mass tires the wrist tendons; short sessions are better than a whole rehearsal.
The large oval and the sound of the head
An oval tip this size puts a lot of surface on the head. The tom's fundamental comes forward, the snare turns thick, and the ride answers with a massive wash rather than a point.
It is not a stick for articulation, and nobody should buy it for that.
