Every gram taken off a stick comes back as rebound speed. On a cáscara played in sustained sixteenth notes, the difference between a 3/8 and a 1/2 in stick is measured in accumulated fatigue, not in a few isolated notes.

This is the size for dense, fast repertoire, where the right hand never stops and has to last through several songs in a row.

A smaller diameter transfers less energy to the metal: the shell sounds brighter and quieter, and the cowbell loses some depth. In a small group or with a close microphone, that is an advantage — the sound stays clean without taking over.

In a full band without miking, the same size disappears. Choosing a diameter is therefore first a choice about the sonic context.

Do thin timbale sticks break faster?

They are more exposed, yes, especially on the shell. Hickory limits the risk, but playing only on the metal wears them faster than a heavy size.

Is this size enough for a salsa band?

Unmiked, no: it lacks projection. With a close microphone, it is perfectly usable and stays very clean.

Is it suitable for small hands or young percussionists?

It is often the most comfortable size for a small hand, as long as you accept less volume.

Can I switch between two sizes during the same gig?

Many percussionists do: a thin pair for fast songs, a thicker pair for passages that need to carry.
