Zildjian FX Trashformer 10" Effects Cymbal
The FX Trashformer 10" is a thin, colour-tinted effects cymbal with a deliberately trashy voice. Played alone, it gives an airy, explosive splash; stacked on top of or under another cymbal, it adds a layer of white noise to that cymbal's sound.
What sets it apart
- Alone, an airy splash effect
- Stacked, a layer of white noise
- Non-traditional wavy curve
- A colour tint unique to each cymbal
The shape makes the sound
The Trashformer doesn't have the even profile of a classic cymbal: its curvature is wavy. According to Zildjian, that shape is what produces its funky, trashy effects. Its coloured tint also sets it apart visually, and Zildjian warns that the colour varies from one cymbal to the next.
The 10" on the Sound Lab
The 10" rates 9 for brightness, 2 for dryness, 7 for definition and 4 for sustain. So it's very bright and short, though a little longer than the 8" (sustain of 3). Zildjian publishes three sound clips: crash, choked crash and crescendo.

Frequently asked questions
- Can you play a Trashformer like a splash?
- Yes. Played alone, it gives what Zildjian calls an airy, explosive splash effect, with a trashier colour than a regular splash.
- How do you stack it?
- On top of or under another cymbal, on the same stand. It then adds a layer of white noise to the main cymbal's sound.
- 8" or 10" Trashformer?
- The 8" is the brightest (10) and the shortest (sustain of 3). The 10" is a bit more defined (7 against 6) and sustains a little longer (4).
