DW Hardware Standard Hi-Hat Clutch, 7 mm
This standard hi-hat clutch fits a 7 mm rod and comes complete: wing screw, two felt washers, knurled nuts and a lock nut. It is the part that holds the top cymbal of the hi-hat, and the one that is always missing a piece at the bottom of the hardware bin.
What sets it apart
- Fits 7 mm rods
- Complete set: wing screw, two felts, knurled nuts, lock nut
- Published as the brand's standard replacement clutch
- Replaces an incomplete clutch without hunting parts one by one
- Chrome finish
Seven millimetres, the number that decides everything
The diameter of a hi-hat stand's inner rod is not universal. Seven millimetres is the most common size, but a stand from another era or another manufacturer can fall outside that measurement, and the clutch will not tighten properly.
It is a thirty-second check with calipers, or by comparing it to the part you are replacing. It avoids the only possible disappointment with this purchase, because everything else — felts, nuts, screw — is included.
The pressure on the two felts, and the sound that comes out
The top cymbal is held between two felt washers. How tight the nut is decides how much freedom it gets: clamped tight, it vibrates little, responds short and chokes; left loose, it moves on its axis, sustains longer and gives the slight shimmer you hear on hi-hats played open.
It is one of the cheapest adjustments on the kit and one of the most overlooked. Loosening it a quarter turn changes a hi-hat's character far more surely than changing its cymbals.
Why buy a complete clutch
A clutch comes apart every time you change cymbals, and it comes apart in small pieces. One crushed felt, one knurled nut left on a venue floor, and the part no longer holds anything properly.
Buying the whole set takes less time than tracking down each piece separately, and it ensures the new felts work with new threads. A spare clutch kept in the case also solves the evening breakdown, which always happens when the store is closed.

Frequently asked questions
- How do I know if my rod is really 7 mm?
- Calipers give you the answer immediately. Otherwise, compare the part you are replacing directly with this one.
- What exactly is in the set?
- A wing screw, two felt washers, knurled nuts and a lock nut.
- Should the top cymbal be clamped tight?
- No. Set the tension by ear: tight, the sound is short; loose, the cymbal breathes and sustains a little longer.
- Does this clutch work for double pedal playing?
- It is a standard clutch: it holds the cymbal, it does not lock the hi-hat in the closed position. That job belongs to a drop clutch.
